Philosophy

My success has been developed through my use of classical training, using the training pyramid for horse and rider. I do not ride the horse through the rider but instead help the rider to learn what tools to use to become more effective. I am very good at seeing the blocked areas in a rider that is causing communication problems to the horse, and strive to achieve harmony with horse and rider by balancing the areas that should be focused on. That is: I may need to work only on the rider's position in order to achieve a level of effectiveness before working on the horse. I try to balance the two needs. I am also very good with mares and sensitive type horses. Almost 60% of the horses I work with are mares. I also like to incorporate cavalletti and small jumps to balance the training, which also helps build the horses topline as well as enhance their mind. I strive to make riding fun; afterall, you own the horse because you love him!

Experience

Nikko of Noble
New Owner: Dee Dee Miller
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to train and clinic throughout the United States and Germany with world-class trainers and instructors through FEI work. In 1993, I earned the USDF Silver Medal. In 2012, earned the USDF University Certificate! The USDF University program was initiated to provide and encourage continuing education in dressage and to recognize the cumulative educational achievements of USDF Members. In October 2012, audited the Ashley Holzer and Stephen Clark clinic hosted by NEDA. I have been to Germany six times, including trips to observe riding at Rolf Henn's barn; I have been to IAES (International Academy of Equine Studies) run by Stephan Kiesewetter for 2 weeks training and theory; I went to the Bundeschampionate in 2002, and have audited the first Young Horse Trainers Symposium at Hilltop Farm. I have audited several Lisa Wilcox's and Ernst Hoyos seminars hosted by NEDA and USDF. I also attended the USDF symposium with Ingrid Klimke about incorporating cavaletti into the training program. I rode in "Through the Levels" with Steffen Peters and Janet Brown with three different horses: Mikael, Harmony's FX and Opus 96.

I have done extensive research into the biomechanics of the rider's seat, and am able to help my student develop and use their seat more effecitively and confidently. I have cliniced with: Steffen Peters, Susan Jacoma, Leslie Webb, Michael Klimke, Axel Steiner, Janet Foy, Christine Traurig, Stephan Kiesewetter & Christianne Borchett both trainers from IAES, Andras Szieberth, Siegfried Winkler, Randall Moore (Level 3 Parelli instructor) and Larry Fleming. I have also trained with: Jan Ebeling at Capricorn Farms, Sue Halasz at Southern Pines and Scott Hassler at Harmony Sport Horses.

"I have ridden with Kelly for several years. When I started with her, I was at the end of my rope, ready to sell my horse and quit. She restored my confidence and made riding a pleasure again. Because of Kelly and her excellent guidance, I am now a better rider, a better competitor, and a better teacher. Kelly's depth of knowledge was indispensable when I purchased a new horse who needed rehabilitation. She has been extremely patient with me as I struggled to dump old habits and old bad mindsets. Her sense of humor makes every lesson a joy! 2009 represented my most successful and pleasurable season of dressage competition. It wouldn't have happened without Kelly!"
    -Eileen Claffy

"I have known Kelly Boyd for over 20 years. Last year, when I was able to return to Dressage with two very different types of horses, Kelly was the trainer I contacted for help, and I'm glad I did. I have found Kelly to be consistent, correct, and kind to both horse and rider. Kelly seems able to assess the needs of each horse (and rider), adjust her approach accordingly, and thus get the best possible performance from everyone. From a rider's perspective, I find that Kelly usually has more than one way to explain what she is asking from horse and rider, and is a proactive instructor. She is right out there in the arena working us from the ground, if necessary. Kelly is demanding, but we still have time for humor and fun. Kelly is doing a great job for me and for my horses, and I am happy that we could reconnect after so many years."
    - Kiki Stein

"Kelly has a special talent of making all your lessons positive. You always leave her lessons with a "can do" attitude!"
    - Carol Perry

"Kelly always has interesting exercises and she always explains them clearly. The fact that she keeps a log of her work with each of her horses in training is impressive as well as the homework we get each week. Rojo had a very serious back injury several years ago and getting his back 'back' has been an extremely arduous process with many setbacks. Now he is "fit as a fiddle" - to quote the vet - and doing better in his work then ever before. All of his physical improvements can be credited to Kelly and her insistence on correct work. And he likes her!"
    - Stacey Susan Mikula and Palladium's Patriot (Rojo)

"As a former upper-level jumper, it was important for me to get a trainer who actually rode my horse! Kelly doesn't use a groom or assistant, so I knew I would get the training I expected, and gave Godiva and me her full attention! Godiva is VERY picky about who she wants to work with, and she enjoys (and even talks) to Kelly -- that means alot to me!"
    - Mara Singer & Godiva, Friesian-cross mare

"After I adopted my Mustang mare, we worked with several trainers. It became clear to me, there are very few trainers who understand the mind of the mustang. They simply do not have the same responses to humans we see from domesticated horses. Kelly's own experience with "Andy" and her ability to work so effectively with a mare, made her the perfect trainer for me and my horse! She works with both my Mustang mare and my Hungarian/Holsteiner gelding. Both horses continue to improve as a result of her training methods. Her positive teaching approach as well as her kind, gentle handling of horse and rider make my lessons fun!"
